2020 Volnay Clos des Angles 1. Cru Marquis d'Angerville

Very attractive crimson purple. The bouquet is all elegance, the palate a bit richer with raspberry and strawberry together, and just a few tannins to bring up the finish. The Clos des Angles is a little lower in acidity than most of the d’Angerville 2020s.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru has a floral bouquet, rose petal and iris, plenty of red cherry and strawberry fruit with sous-bois elements becoming apparent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite foursquare and maybe just a little brief on the finish. Fine, though a little outclassed by its siblings in this vintage.

Pretty and perfumed, the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles wafts from the glass with notes of sweet red berries, plums, rose petals, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned, it's lively and precise, with filigree tannins and an aromatic finish.

Here the nose ramps up the floral influence even further though there is also ample earth influence to the ripe aromas of plum, dark currant and just slice fennel. Once again, the mouthfeel is gorgeous with its lilting texture and subtle minerality that seems to become more prominent on the balanced and lingering finish. A ballerina of a wine though this is not ‘code’ for light as there is very good aging potential.
