2014 Mullineux Syrah Swartland Mullineux Wines

Since its first vintage in 2008, the Mullineux's Syrah has established itself as one of the most reliable reds in the Cape, the new "Graillot Crozes", as I like to think of it. Sourced from nine vineyards on three different soil types, with 100% whole bunches, it's a textbook Syrah: spicy, sappy and wonderfully aromatic. Drink: 2016-21.

Another absolute belter from the brilliant winemaking duo of Chris and Andrea Mullineux. It seems that this husband and wife team can do no wrong - certainly, there's nothing not to like about this stunning effort which boasts a deep colour, intense aroma and a gorgeous fruit compote palate including bilberries, damsons, blackberries, coffee bean and vanilla. Moreover, the ensemble is topped off with richness, freshness and admirable length on the imperious finish.

Full dark red. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, black plum, mocha, dried flowers, crushed black pepper and spices. At once sweet, dense and juicy, offering a fine-grained texture and no rough edges to its dark berry, coffee and spice flavors. This very firmly built, dense, lively wine will need a few years to express itself. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and lovely black pepper lift.

Black cherry and raspberry fruit streams through, lined with subtle pepper, violet and mesquite shadings. Has flesh and succulence, but stays racy overall, with a lingering sanguine note. Drink now through 2020.

This ripe selection conveys a superb sense of balance and refinement, with forward aromas and flavors of black cherry and brambly berry framed by notes of wood spice, mocha and pressed violet. Velvety in feel, the texture is plush and seductive, with fine yet structured tannins and ample acidity to keep the palate fresh through the close. It's certainly delicious now, but this should age well through 2022.
