2013 Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes Perrot-Minot

A big, rich wine, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru emphasizes extract and density, followed by gorgeous aromatics that give the wine its sense of dimension. The 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru, which like the Clos de Bèze is matured in 30% new oak, has a tighty-wound bouquet with broody red berry fruit, oyster shell and granitic scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip. This seems more linear than the Clos-de-Bèze at the moment, but there is very good depth and a precise saline finish that will obviously need time and patience. I hope that it gains just a little more flesh by the time of bottling as this is a very fine Chambertin in the making.

This is even more aromatically restrained than the Bèze with a markedly floral and earth-scented nose of both red and dark berries that is cool, elegant and airy. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors are a bit more mineral-driven as well and I very much like the mid- palate density that adds to the sense of scale, all wrapped in hugely long finish where the abundant dry extract does a fine job of pushing the very firm tannic spine to the background, at least for the moment. The Bèze is a knock-out but my instinct is that ultimately this will prove to be the slightly better wine in time.
